EndNote: Output Styles

Ouptut Styles

What is an Output Style?

Output Styles are sets of instructions which EndNote uses to format your references in the style of your choice. EndNote vX1 comes with more than 3000 different output styles. The EndNote vX1 Notes explain how to set the output style in EndNote.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate users of EndNote should select the APA5th style. Using EndNote cannot make up for a lack of understanding about referencing. You need to know when to reference and also how a formatted reference should look. For more information, students should consult either the ECU Referencing Guide or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 5th Edition (ECU library call no. 808.06615PUB.

Higher Degree Students & Staff

References should be formatted in a style used by a major international journal in the area of study. For students this is to be determined in consultation with the principal supervisor.

Many students still choose to use the APA5th style. Postgraduate students are advised to consult the full APA manual:
Publication manual of the American Psychological Association 5th Edition (ECU Library call No. 808. 06615 PUB). The update for electronic referencing is available through the ECU library (ECU library call No. 808.066 APA). EndNote vX1 comes with enhanced electronic reference types for use with APA5th.
